Produce paint

Process Description

This process details the standard paint manufacturing process. The raw materials used in the manufacturing of paint includes:

  1. Pigments
  2. Solvents
  3. Resins (Binders)
  4. Other additives

Batch production of paint involves five major steps:

  1. Pick raw materials from the stores

The operators use the production card to pick the relevant raw material and items from the raw material stores.

  1. Pre-assembly and premix

The first step in the manufacturing process is pre-assembly and premix.  In this step (Grinding), the selected raw materials are assembled and mixed to form a viscous material. The premix stage results in the formation of an intermediate product which is referred to as base or mill base.

  1. Product finishing

During this step of the process, the finishing operator finalizes the product color by adding raw materials defined on the production card. The operator brushes out the color onto the production card where it is compared to a standard by the production manager. This process is repeated until the color matches the standard.

Once the product meets the standard, the color is approved by the production manager.

  1. Adjusting

Final product specifications are achieved in the product finishing step which consists of adjusting the viscosity of the product. The adjusting operator finalizes the adjustment by adding raw materials defined on the production card.

The batch of final paint is given an ERP system generated batch number.

  1. Decanting

The final step in the paint manufacturing process is decanting paint from the mixing machine into relevant container sizes as defined in the Assembly BOM.

Containers are then labelled and identified with the batch number.
